Seaweed washed onto a sandy beach beside the ocean

Tide Taxi

Crab Helmet

Something green was lying

across the trail.

A crab with a seashell helmet

poked it.

Nothing.

The crab poked it again.

It poked back.

The seashell helmet

slipped sideways.

The crab climbed aboard.

Flomble shrugged.

A piece of kelp was wrapped

around one ankle.

A feather was tangled

behind one ear.

Something small was living

in its pocket.

Nobody asked.

Flomble flopped onto a rock.

"Where are you going?"

asked the crab.

Flomble looked around.

"Here."

"But you're already here."

"Good."

The tide came in.

A wave reached over the rock

and grabbed Flomble.

WHOOSH.

Flomble floated around

the corner.

The crab tucked its legs in.

Mostly.

A few minutes later—

SPLAT.

Flomble landed between two

rocks playing checkers.

A starfish was having a

rubarb sandwich.

Flomble puddled beside the

starfish.

"Nice."

The crab climbed down and

inspected the neighborhood.

Another wave arrived.

WHOOSH.

This one carried Flomble

across the beach.

Then kept going.

Across the sand.

Up the trail.

There wasn't any water

there anymore.

Flomble looked down.

"Huh."

Flomble kept puddling.

A squirrel got wet.

Eventually, Flomble landed

halfway up a tree.

SPLAT.

The crab looked over

the edge.

A tiny fish popped out of

Flomble's pocket.

"Sorry."

It popped back in.

By afternoon, Flomble had

acquired a kelp scarf,

three grains of sand,

a feather,

and one extremely long

piece of seaweed trailing

behind like a royal cape.

The crab walked on it.

Naturally.

Eventually, another wave

dropped Flomble onto

a quiet stretch of shore.

SPLAT.

Flomble wiggled into

the sand.

The crab climbed off.

For approximately three seconds,

nothing happened.

Then a tiny wave reached up

and grabbed Flomble's ankle.

"Oh."

WHOOSH.

The crab watched Flomble

disappear around the rocks.

Then hurried after it.

The moon smiled upside down.

The earth whispered, "Wheee."

And there are popsicles on

Thursdays.

Here for now

Whoosh
