Wind moving through trees and leaves along a forest trail

Rain Pockets

Sail Ears

Womper stepped outside with

one ear still asleep.

Nothing.

No wind.

No rain.

Not even a cloud with one shoe

on and somewhere to be.

Womper looked around.

"Is it broken?"

WHOOSH.

Womper's ears shot sideways

like startled pancakes.

Its legs grew one pickle taller.

Its tail pointed east.

Then west.

Then at a squirrel carrying

a cucumber.

The squirrel checked.

Just cucumber.

No wind.

Womper womped along.

Drip.

Drip.

Rain.

Womper's fur went sideways.

Two little gutters appeared

along its shoulders.

They filled with rain.

A frog climbed into one.

It unfolded a lawn chair.

SPLASH.

Womper stepped into mud.

Its feet widened one ravioli each.

Then widened again.

Womper took a step.

Three worms moved their

badminton game.

Womper took three steps,

the mud kept the second one.

The clouds unbuttoned.

Sun.

Tiny warm spots appeared across

Womper's back.

A grasshopper stretched and

laid out a beach towel.

Womper kept womping.

The air turned cold.

POOF.

Womper doubled in size.

POOF.

Again.

A bird landed on Womper's

head.

Then brought a twig and built

a nest in the puffball upstairs.

Womper womped along.

Mist wandered in with its

shoelaces untied.

Womper's whiskers curled.

Tiny drops gathered along

its eyebrows.

Each one had little forest.

Womper counted seven.

The frog counted nine.

The bird was busy.

The grasshopper asleep.

Then—

WHOOSH.

Womper's ears opened like sails.

Its tail stood straight out.

For three steps, Womper wasn't

entirely womping.

The bird lost a twig.

The frog waved.

The grasshopper sat up.

Then everything stopped.

No wind.

No rain.

No mist.

Perfect temperature.

Womper stopped too.

And waited.

A leaf stood on tiptoe.

Womper's ears perked up.

WHOOSH.

One ear caught the afternoon.

The other followed.

The moon smiled upside down.

The earth whispered, "Wheee."

And there are popsicles on

Thursdays.

Elements knock

Toe with it
